” This Is Us, the hit NBC drama series, is losing one of the 11 Emmy nominations that it received on July 13, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed with the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

To be eligible for a nomination in the category of outstanding contemporary costumes for a series, limited series or movie, a show must submit an episode in which at least 51 percent of the action takes place within the past 25 years.

The Awards Committee of the TV Academy has determined that “Moonshadow,” the season-finale episode of This Is Us that its costume designer Hala Bahmet submitted, fails to meet that threshold, with a majority of the episode taking place in an earlier time period — specifically, in the 1970s, to which the show frequently flashes back.

Therefore, the academy has rescinded its nomination, which had gone to Bahmet, as well as Marina Ray and Elinor Bardach

HBO’s Big Little Lies, Fox’s Empire, Netflix’s Grace and Frankie and Amazon’s Transparent remain in the contemporary costumes category, and a replacement fifth nominee will be announced shortly.

A TV Academy representative tells THR: “Having reviewed the ‘Moonshadow’ episode of This Is Us, the Awards Committee noted that the entrant unfortunately miscalculated the proportion of scenes that were period versus contemporary. In fact, the episode is predominately period. The entry (and subsequent nomination) are thereby disqualified. The sixth-place vote-getter — now the fifth nomination — will be identified by the accountants and will be revealed when the Television Academy’s final round viewing platform opens on Monday.”

While the rescinding of Emmy nominations is not common, it is not unprecedented. It happened to Dennis Miller in 1995, Henry Winkler in 2000 and Peter MacNicol in 2016. ”
